September 12, 2011 -- NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Wardell Quezergue (kuh-ZEHR), the composer and teacher known as the "Creole Beethoven," has died. He was 81. He died Tuesday. Songwriter and pianist Allen Toussaint (too-SAHN') gave Quezergue his nickname. He describes Quezergue as a superb musician and band leader who raised the bar in rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll, and who always inspired people to their best performances.

Smiley Lewis is one of the founders of New Orleans rhythm and blues. Smiley recorded for the
Imperial label with many of Dave Bartholomew's creations. But at the time, the sound Smiley Lewis produced seemed too "rough"
for the general white audiences of the 1950s. After recording after recording failed to chart,
Fats Domino re-recorded several of the songs. Those recorded by Fats Domino were re-issued on the Imperial label
and soon became hits.

Unfortunately, Smiley Lewis never seemed to attract a large following outside of the small, local
black clubs in New Orleans proper. One of the great legends of New Orleans music is perhaps
unknown to the rest of the music world. Dave Bartholomew is quoted as saying Smiley is one of the
unluckiest people recording; he never sold more than
100,000 copies of a single record.

The songs listed showcase Dave Bartholomew's vocals. Dave Bartholomew wrote and arranged
as many as four thousand songs for a variety of New Orleans' top rhythm and blues artists
during the 1950s and 1960s. Many of Dave Bartholomew's compositions were later recorded by
Smiley Lewis, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Shirley & Lee, Chris Kenner, Lloyd Price and other local artists.

During the later 1950s, Dave and his band worked behind the scenes on hundreds of New Orleans artists recording sessions. The name Bartholomew may be seen as lyricist on hundreds of New Orleans compositions produced during the 1950s.

Dave Bartholomew perfected the commercial formula for success durign the 1950s. He
arranged songs to fit a 2-minute play time, which was in favor with AM radio stations. His songs were simple, with simple rhythms. Most of his songs became popular when sung and released by other artists in New Orleans. Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, and Sugar Boy Crawford released several songs which were written by Dave Bartholomew.

Snooks Eaglin is a Louisiana musician who is noted as much for his influence in the Delta
as a creative lyricist and unusual guitarist. Snooks Eaglin played guitar with the Cane Cutters on many of Sugar Boy Crawford's
Checker label cuts during 1953 and 1954. Thereafter, Snooks was a New Orleans street singer during his early career after
leaving the Cane Cutters.
Snooks Eaglin recorded many vinyl LPs for the New Orleans label, Black Top, during the 1980s.
We recently added a discography of 45-rpm records by this artist!!!

Snooks Eaglin is an outstanding performer who was overlooked because he seemingly refused to
produce music just for the sake of popularity. He wrote hundreds of songs, and these songs were
covered by artists as diverse as Earl King and Eric Clapton. Snooks Eaglin is a creative genius
who deserves to be recognized as a pioneer in a study of New Orleans music history!!!

Earl King, born Earl Silas Johnson IV, was a New Orleans based artist. He wrote and recorded hundreds of songs, in many styles,
ranging from New Orleans rhythm & blues in the 1950s
to more progressive soul arrangements. The short list that follows represents
his traditional New Orleans sounds. Most of Earl's singles were issued on the Ace, Specialty, and Imperial labels.

Earl Silas Johnson IV used the stage name Earl King throughout most of his recording career.
Earl King (born Earl Silas Johnson IV) of New Orleans is not the same artist as Earl Connelly King (Philadelphia, PA).

Earl King wrote and recorded "soul" songs throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He continued to be
a commercial success long after the classic rhythm and blues period ended. Earl King is one of the
few artists to remain a commercial success after the so-called "British Invasion."
Although Earl had only regional success in the singles 45 rpm market, he went on to be a
respected national performer. He later played and recorded with "Roomful of Blues." Earl King
gained success in the vinyl LP and CD market by catering to a soul audience in the 1970s and 1980s.

Professor Longhair - New Orleans' most unusual piano player and recording artist.
The short list of recordings detail the years before mega stars such as Little Richard
and Fats Domino dominated the New Orleans music scene.

Professor Longhair was a performer "par excellance." His performances and recordings featured his unusual piano style.
As such, very few of his recording were
released as singles. Most of his works may be found on LP vinyl.
Professor Longhair seemed to be a pure artist without regard for radio
air play and commercial success. Professor Longhair gained popularity especially for his Mardi Gras
music. The man could not be imitated with his piano style.

James "Sugar Boy" Crawford is a unique rhythm and blues artist - one of
New Orleans' greatest performers. James Crawford recorded under the names Shaw Weez, Shaweez, Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters,
James Sugar Boy, and later simply James Crawford, Jr. The group the Shaw-Weez consisted of Edgar "Big Boy" Myles,
James Crawford, Warren "Jake" Myles, guitarist Irving Banister, and Eugene "Bones" Jones on drums.

James "Sugar Boy" Crawford is the only child of Mary and James Crawford Sr. Sugar Boy grew up in the Uptown
section of New Orleans. He got his first introduction to music on Sundays at
the Baptist Church. By the time he reached his teens, he had learned to
play the trombone, piano, and joined a marching band.
While in high school he had a band, notably with Edgar "Big Boy"
Myles. The group caught a break in 1952, when Doctor Daddy-O (a New Orleans DJ) invited them
to perform on his Saturday morning radio show. The group didn't have a name
until Daddy-O dubbed them, "The Chapaka Shawee" (Creole for "We Aren't Raccoons"),
the title of an instrumental the group played.

By the late 1959 through 1963 Sugar Boy was extremely popular with white audiences.
Sugar Boy and his band performed at dances, clubs, and private parties in Louisiana.
Sugar Boy never had a large, record buying, black audience .

The Imperial years from 1956 to 1957 represent a crossover mark, aimed to please his mainly
white audience. Unlike earlier Aladdin and Chess recordings, the Imperial records were
well received on white New Orleans radio.

Sugar Boy had three sessions for Imperial and was backed up by Dave
Bartholomew's band: Lee Allen, Herb Hardesty, Justin Adams, Frank Fields and Earl
Palmer. These were recorded at Cosimo's Studio in New Orleans.

Sugar Boy Crawford - (Ace 625 1961 45-rpm) I Cried / Have A Little Mercy

1963 - stay in the hospital - Sugar Boy and his band were on their way to a job in North Louisiana,
when state troopers pulled him over for the crime of being a black man in a flashy
brand-new automobile. One of Louisiana's "finest" took exception to Sugar Boy's attitude
and proceeded to pistol-whip him on the side of the road.
Sugar Boy spent three weeks in the hospital and was incapacitated for two years.

Ernest Kador started as front-man for the The Blue Diamonds.
After attempts to make a name for himself, he tired of mispronounced airings of his name. He tried Kador (r-ending is silent in New Orleans). Still DJs called him Kadore, Kado, whatever. So he devised the K-Doe moniker, which was a sure-fire marketing genius.
